Every child matters. Growing Winchelsea, together with interested parents, has started a journey to help tackle the challenges our children face at our school today. As a community working together we hope to explore and establish a better future for them.
“It takes time, but we are in it for the long haul. At our last committee meeting an Education Facilities Subcommittee with Megan Morris as Chairman, was formed to advocate for better facilities in the short term, but in the longer term, lobby for a new school catering for students from Prep to Year 12 to service our predicted population growth,” said John Tebbutt, President of Growing Winchelsea Inc.
It is predicted our population will soar to over 18,000 by 2051 in just over 25 years.
“This is staggering when you consider our population is now 3,000. We are likely to experience the same expansion that Bannockburn has had,” continues John.
“It is vital that Winchelsea considers the immediate needs of the school such as replacement of fencing, spouting, removal and prevention of pests and vermin and repair the damage made by Corellas, rats and possums, repairs due to water damage and leaks to name a few,” said Megan School Council President.
Planning for the medium term is also required to work with the Department of Education and Surf Coast Shire to identify and acquire land in Winchelsea for construction of a new State School. Then in the long term the construction by 2034 of a new P-12 school.
“Now is the time for action to put the plight of our Primary School on the map and to start the necessary planning for our increasing population, concludes John.
